Creating your Burlesque persona.

Thanks to the gorgeous art of dance Burlesque Belle Betty Corbeau (pictured above) for sharing this information that she found on the New York School of Burlesque website. The website has some great suggestions to help you chose your new Burlesque stage name

"Here are some combinations to try, with examples.

A city and a color - Austin Blue

A flower and a cheese - Daisy Roquefort

A fruit and a modifier - Kiwi Dear

A given name and a god - Paul Anubis

An era and a given name - Weimar Sue

A given name and a weapon - Lucy Gunn

A kind of fabric and a kind of music - Velvet Baroque

A modifier and a common last name, with alliteration - Silky Smith

Your hobby and a form of royalty - The Spinning Duchess

A phrase that sounds like a name - Demi Monde

This is just an exercise for a name to use in class. If you are trying to create a name you may use regularly, you will want to do a careful web search with your new name to make sure it’s not in use by another performer (it doesn’t matter whether that performer is in burlesque or not, as we often perform in variety shows), or compromised by being the name of a product, song name, or character in a movie or book. If it’s in use, let it go. You’re a genius and will come up with something new and equally fabulous!

Some names are perfect for burlesque, but are so common they will make it difficult for people to tell you apart from other performers. Some examples are Kitten (and variations on cat nicknames), Cherry, Scarlet, and the like. I recommend avoiding using certain over-identified last names as well, such as L’Amour, Valentine, Tease, Martini—you get the idea! If one of these is your real name, by all means, own it. But if you assume a new name too similar to other artists, you risk getting lost in the crowd."

"I am delighted to announce the new weekly burlesque classes to be held in the Boudoir at our Plymouth studio, 26 Seaton lane, PL4 6QH. I am also thrilled to announce the formation of our new art of dance burlesque troupe – The Burlesque Belles.

Weekly classes will be held every Wednesday at 7pm and will commence on Wednesday 2nd June at 7pm. Classes last for 1 hour. Classes are limited to 10 participants per lesson.

Burlesque lessons will cost £8 (non – members) per session or you can sign up to our fabulous new burlesque membership scheme which will give you 4 lesson per month for just £24 – that’s £6 per lesson).

What is burlesque?

Burlesque is traditionally thought of as cabaret although the recent coverage of artists such as Dita Von Teese has put the emphasis on striptease.

At the art of dance our burlesque goddesses Georgina Gale and Miss Amelia B teach a blend of modern and traditional burlesque. Our classes include striptease, chair dancing using props, developing musicality choreography, department, stage presence and developing your burlesque character.

The aim of our classes is to help you increase your self-confidence as well as developing good posture and mobility.

Our classes are fun and friendly and are a great chance to socialise with new people.

We provide a selection of props for you to work with but as your burlesque character develops you will be encouraged to get your own costumes and props and to develop your own stage routines. We will give you the opportunity to perform your routines at one of our burlesque nights should you wish to do so.

We recommend wearing comfy clothes for your first lesson and to bring a pair of heels with. After your first lesson you can start to bring in different items to work with and will end up doing classes in your full costume.

At long last the second Plymouth studio is finally open and I am ready to start teaching weekly group Burlesque sessions. To book any of my lessons just use this link. Lessons will be held on a Wednesday evening (starting 19th August) at 6.30pm and will last for an hour. Each lesson will be limited to a maximum of 10 places only so booking in advance is highly recommended.

The Burlesque lessons not only help keep you active but they will improve both your posture and your confidence. Burlesque is a fabulous way to stay in shape whilst having fun and unlike the art of dance high impact pole dancing lessons is more suitable for those of you who want to keep fit at a slower pace!

Each lesson costs £10 per person but if you book a 6 week block you get your lesson at just £8 per lesson.
Taster sessions £8 only – Wednesday 19th August, Wednesday 26th August & Wednesday 2nd September. 6 week course starts Wednesday 9th September.

My Burlesque lessons will run in a 6 week block with each lesson aiming to cover a different area of Burlesque, see my schedule below,

Week 1 – Posture / deportment – Wednesday 9th September
Week 2 – Music & Movement – Wednesday 16th September
Week 3 – Choreography – Wednesday 23rd September
Week 4 - Basic striptease – Wednesday 30th September
Week 5 –Off the wall!! – Wednesday 7th October
Week 6 – putting together your final performance – Wednesday 14th October

At the end of each 6 week block we will be holding an open evening for anyone wanting to come in and do an amateur Burlesque performance! Full details to follow.

Catherine D'Lish

It is less than 3 weeks till the opening of the second studio and at long last I will be able to provide regular Burlesque classes rather than just private lessons. Sam has been talking about a Burlesque artist called Catherine D'Lish, Sam found Catherine's video on Glamourpuss's blog. Catherine has the most amazing dress and I am looking forward to seeing more of her work.

The Ball is getting ever closer and I haven't even chosen a song yet, Sam is going to get hold of a few songs for me to see if I can pick one for the 7th June, wish me luck,

Hello again my lovelys,
Just a quick up date on last weeks goings on!

Thursday's fund raiser for St Luke's went down a storm. Sam, Jo and myself helped rise loads of money whilst having a ball our selves. I enjoyed myself enormously with the added bonus that my mum was in the audience! Thursday was the first time that she has seen me dance in the seven years I've been dancing.

Sunday, the girls and I went to help Sam promote the Art of Dance at the Devon Car Show. It was the hottest day on record! Of course! We all burnt but had a fab day and hopefully we will be able to go back next year.

Sunday evening saw the Full Monty Boys from Raffles give the performance of their lives! WOW!!!!!!! Was very impressed they where brilliant! And as an added bonus they gave Sam, Rosanna and me the most beautiful boquet of flowers each. Well done guys and thank you all very much! haven't laughed that much in an age.

Hello again one and all,

I don't know about you guys but this year seems to be getting away from me! It will be August before we know it, end of next week in fact......

So what have I been up to? Well the pole perfection class was loads of fun and hopefully enjoyed by all who attended. Also spent a delicious hour with Mia and Mel in a one to one, thanks guys.

I also danced for channel five for a documentary on the seven deadly sins? Fun if a long way to go!

Tonight I am joining Sam, Jo and the girls for a charity do at Raffles, hoping to raise lots of lovely lolly for St Lukes. So if your bored later pop down and support us, will be glad of all and any support.

Tomorrow a big posse of us pole dancers are going to see flash dance I for one can not wait, bring it on.

And that brings me onto Saturday, Sam is having a pole jam session here at the gym, one and all welcome.

Sunday will see most of the tutors, including me, from The Art of Dance performing at Devon and Exeter Race Course. Come along it should be a great family day out. Look forward to seeing you all at one or all of the above!

Hello one and all,

Having just got back from the depths of Bulgaria, where I went for a week of rest and relaxation, I now feel rejuvenated and ready to jump back into the fray. With that in mind I will be taking a master class on Saturday July the fifth at twelve fifteen. It will be called Pole Perfection! Any one wishing to slow there routine down should attend but hurry because places are limited.

Before I went I took a lovely class for burlesque at Exeter. All the ladies who attended seemed to enjoy the experience enormously? Watch this space for more classes to come.

Do not forget that I am available for private lessons here or in your own home to book just follow the prompts on the web site or call Sam.

I would also like to say a big thank you to all the students who attended our night out on thirty first of May it was lovely to see so many of you. To all the students and tutors who danced wow!!!!! For all those who did not dance this time I look forward to your performances in the future!

Hello one and all,

Thank you for being so patient with me. Sorry for the long delay since i wrote last but have moved home! Very stressful as I'm sure you will agree.

Well the good news is that the new studio is imminent i for one can not wait! I will be doing a taster session early in May! Watch this space for updates!

For those of you who still do not know what Burlesque is the literal translation is cabaret! Or in other words (my words) removing your clothes with panache!

My taster will include :-posture, strutting, body isolation, and the removal of clothes. Its good fun as any one who has been before will tell you but you do need to leave your inhibitions at the door.

It is the day after my performance at Annabel's and it seems to have been warmly welcomed. I have just read Sam's blog and she has written some lovely things. I hope that the video from last night is ok so that I can post it here for your comments. I will keep it short and sweet today but will be back soon. Looking forward to going to the circus next week with Rosie (my daughter) and Sam.

I was surprised last night at the response from the audience, after I left the stage a lady in her fifties approached me and said that she normally hated stripping and exotic dance but she loved my performance, I was extremely flattered to have feedback like this. As usual all of the art of dance students were a great source of support, great to see so many familiar faces in the audience.

If any of you were there last night then please give me any feedback on my performance.

Watch out for me in the Herald next week - the article should go in on Friday 24th August, I took their reporter Jojo for a Burlesque lesson!

Latest news - I have expanded my classes due to popular demand and am now offering voice and movement training and walking classes. I can cover any area from walking down the aisle to wedding dance choreography or how to successfully walk into an interview to nipple tassling to sexy dancing. You name it I can teach it! I teach groups of 1 - 3 people at a coast of £36 a session or groups of 4-10 people at a cost of £10 per person. You can come to the studio or I can come to you.

I will be performing in Annabel's on September 1st, more details to follow and I will be at the art of dance studio for their open day on Friday 24th August from 11am till 3pm.

Hi All,

Well my Burlesque classes are starting to get really busy. I have also been doing other things including wedding choreography and team builds. All great fun. I have just received my video from my pole performance at the art of dance 3rd birthday party - 25th march 2007 - Hope you like it.

My private Burlesque lesson cost £36 and are for 1-3 people, groups of 4 or more cost £10 each. I cover all sorts of things from nipple tassling to body isolation, chair dancing to striptease.

Hi All,

My dates for Annabel's have been moved to September 1st so you will have to wait a bit longer to see me in action. I may however do a small taster this Saturday21st at Annabel's where I will be watching Sam and Jo do their thing on a very low pole - only 2m 5cm which should be interesting!
